Murals as Vibrant Inspiration
The Community Boardworx Project aims to foster community spirit, learning through the arts, skills development, artistic expression and also a sense of pride and accomplishment. Within the theme of education, participating youths were encouraged to share their reasons on the importance of learning. The youths were asked to write on a thought wall "Why we learn". Selected responses were discussed and text was added to the mural. Beyond their artistic contributions to the boards, the youth are also given the chance to draw, write creatively, and even explore photography throughout the project.

Artist Profile - Colin !
Colin Menzies is an artist with a passion for community on a global scale. After completing the Art Direction Program at Central St. Martins in England, Colin has been involved in a series of progressive projects. Under the alias of The Subliminal Rabbit, Colin's illustrative work has been published in Europe and shown in New York and Tokyo. The one thread in this vision has been the image of a rabbit hiding in every piece created, thus the name "Subliminal Rabbit". Colin recently released a dance music album as The Subliminal Rabbit that was circulated by DJ's and received radio play.Colin's history of collaboration with the disabled, elderly, youth and children classify him as a compassionate visionary. Harbouring this talented artist is an investment that will continue to build culture in the city of Calgary.

Artist Profile - Daniel !
Danny Kirk is an emerging artist who was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 2007 where he specialized in painting. He has exhibited his paintings in a variety of venues through out the city of Calgary including: The Little Gallery, The Nickle Arts Museum, TRUCK Gallery, Davis and Company LLP, as well as in numerous community centers and private vendor locations. Danny’s work may now be found in collections all over Canada. Self discovery and observation provide Danny Kirk with inspiration as he creates works that are confrontational yet pleasing to the senses. Much of Danny’s art focuses on various layers of information as he plays with the viewers understanding of themselves and the world around them. Social commentaries are represented through his use of various characters and faces as well as through the use of text. As street after street blossoms with color, one might ask, "How much is enough?" This and many other questions that may arise from it demand thoughtful consideration to preserve both the free creative spirit of the artist and the rights of the public viewer.
The lessons of the past have helped us become aware of the value of murals in providing attractive surroundings. From them we have learned about the methods faced by the makers of murals throughout history. It is hoped that we may contribute to improve our environment by
creating murals through inspiration of ideas, knowledge of media, understanding of the art language, and sensitivity to the world around us. And, in so doing, perhaps we should be able to improve the quality of life for all.
